FOR ONCE IN MY LIFE é o primeiro single da Melanie Brown em oito anos, seguindo TODAY (2005). Mel B surpreendeu os fãs quando postou fotos da gravação de seu videoclipe no dia 11 de setembro. Um dia depois ela revelou que estava prestes a lançar seu novo single e clipe na semana seguinte. A faixa segue a linha dance-pop sendo produzida por DEEKAY Music (Jason Derulo, Lil Wayne, Diddy) e escrita por Mel B, Tim Daniel McEwan, Lars Halvor Jensen, Gita Lake e Negin Djafari.

No dia 17 de setembro Melanie postou a arte da capa do seu novo single, no dia 18, nas vésperas do lançamento, ela mudou a arte oficial e postou outra capa como oficial.

O clipe da canção, que tem a participação de Phoenix (filha da cantora) e Stephen Belafonte (marido de Mel), teve sua estreia no site do blogueiro Perez Hilton no dia 18 de setembro, sendo o vídeo mais assistido do dia no blog, com mais de 26,476 visualizações. No clipe, Melanie percorre a Alameda Wisteria, cenário cenográfico do famoso seriado Desperate Housewives, com diversas trocas de roupas e inclusive um momento polêmico onde ela beija uma cópia de si mesma. Mel publicou o clipe em HD no dia 19 de setembro em sua conta oficial do YouTube. Inúmeras celebridades compartilharam o vídeo e o link para a compra do single pelo Twitter, como as Spice Girls Geri, Emma e Melanie C, os Backstreet Boys, Paris Hilton, Natasha Bedingfield, Ellie Goulding, Wretch 32, Jedward, Derek Hough, Rita Ora, Brian McFadden, Jay Sean, Ronan Keating e Tinchy Stryder, entre muitos outros.

O single foi lançado digitalmente no dia 19 de setembro, no dia seguinte da grande final do programa Amercia's Got Talent. Segundo Mel B, ela pretendia se apresentar na final do programa mas os produtores do show não permitiram, porém, a canção foi executada no teatro em momentos não filmados. Nos dois primeiros dias de lançamento, a canção conseguiu boas posições no iTunes em vários países, com pico de #9 (Argentina) e #69 (Reino Unido). Além disso, o single conseguiu posições significativas no iTunes do Chile, Brasil, Itália e Espanha. Em fevereiro de 2014, o single conseguiu se manter por duas semanas consecutivas no 2º lugar da Billboard Hot Dance Club Songs, um feito surpreendente para uma artista independente concorrendo com nomes como Katy Perry, Cher, Lady Gaga e Avicii.
